Massage during pregnancy is incredibly therapeutic for mother and baby. I have a maternity cushion that can adjust as your body changes, so that you can lay face down! Yay! No side lying unless that is just how you prefer it. The cushion has the belly and breast area scooped out so that lying face down is comfortable.
Through the majority of the pregnancy there are areas that I as the therapist either avoid or use lighter pressure on. Deep pressure on these areas could potentially cause some contractions. I have not had this happen in my 14 years of massage therapy. I work these areas multiple times throughout the massage so you get the relief you need; I just do not work them for long at any given time or deeply.
The good news, is that once you are far enough along that your midwife or doctor gives you the okay to self induce, we will focus the massage on these areas to help bring on contractions; as long as dad/mom/bestie is close by. I can also use ear seeds to stimulate the points of the uterus, endocrine system, and to help calm mama.
